How net metering works in the Maritimes

Net metering is what makes solar pay off in the Maritimes. When your panels produce more power than you're using, the surplus flows back to the grid and your utility credits your account — so you effectively use the grid as a giant battery. Each province runs it a little differently:

  • Prince Edward Island — Maritime Electric, systems up to 100 kW.
  • New Brunswick — NB Power retail-rate credits; balances reset March 31.
  • Nova Scotia — NS Power credits at ~18.5¢/kWh with a 12-month rollover.

The federal Greener Homes grant and loan have wound down, so incentives are now provincial. In the Maritimes that means the PEI Solar Electric Rebate, New Brunswick's Total Home Energy Savings program, and Nova Scotia's net metering.
